Can Fashion Improve Your Mental Health?

By Tyshca Nicole

Mental Health Awareness Month is an observance that takes Mon, May 1, 2023 - Wed, May 31, 2023 in the United States, and is aimed at raising awareness and reducing stigma around mental health issues. The goal of Mental Health Awareness Month is to encourage open conversations about mental health and to promote access to resources and treatment for those who need it. It is a time for individuals, communities, and organizations to come together to increase understanding and support for mental health issues, and to work towards improving the lives of people affected by mental illness.

I’ve often heard the phrase “if you look better, you feel better,” now whether or not this is true is subjective, however I do believe that getting up and putting on your favorite outfit can lift your mood. Fashion has the potential to help improve mental health in a variety of ways. Here are a few examples:

  1. Self-expression: Fashion can be a form of self-expression, allowing individuals to express their creativity, personality, and mood. This can help improve self-esteem and confidence, leading to a more positive outlook on life.

  2. Comfort and well-being: Wearing comfortable and well-fitting clothing can help individuals feel more relaxed and at ease. This can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting better mental health.

  3. Mindfulness: Paying attention to the details of clothing, such as textures, colors, and patterns, can be a form of mindfulness. This can help individuals focus on the present moment and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

  4. Social connection: Fashion can be a way to connect with others who share similar interests and styles. This can lead to a sense of belonging and community, which can have a positive impact on mental health.

  5. Confidence and empowerment: Wearing clothing that makes you feel confident and empowered can help improve your self-image and self-worth. This can lead to better mental health outcomes, including reduced anxiety and depression.

If you or a loved one are battling mental health, know that this fight does not have to be done alone. There are resources available to help. You can go to Mental Health America to learn more.
