Black Owned Makeup Brands

Coffea Flair Editorial

Black women have a hard time putting their faith in the wide variety of cosmetics available on the market. While there are undeniable benefits, it's natural to have doubts about which products are ideal for the different hair textures and skin tones that exist. If you're not sure what to buy, look for solutions developed by people who have been where you are. Here is a list of Black owned makeup lines you should have on your radar.

Beauty Bakerie Cosmetics

Cashmere Nicole established her cruelty-free, vegan beauty line in 2011. Although she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, she fought for five years to expand the line. Nicole's passion for baking inspired the names of her successful makeup line, Beauty Bakerie. Its trademark product, sold exclusively at Ulta, is a line of no-smudge liquid lipsticks called "lip whip."

Fashion Fair

According to their website, "Fashion Fair was the first international prestige cosmetics brand for darker skin tones offered globally in stores from Neiman Marcus to Printemps" (both of which are upscale department stores in the United States). "The brand courageously built a new affirmation of Black beauty, breaking down barriers of race and color in the business world."

Iman

Iman, the famed fashion model, founded the brand in 1994 with the mission of providing cosmetics for women of color. What's more? Shoppers looking for Iman items at Walmart will have luck.

Pat McGrath Labs

Fenty Beauty

In 2017, Rihanna's Fenty Beauty made a splash when it debuted at Sephora with 40 distinct foundation tones to choose from. Rihanna is the wealthiest female musician in the industry, according to Forbes, thanks to her $1.7 billion fortune, which she reportedly earned via her makeup line, which is now a dominant force, including a multitude of other items, and has helped Rih acquire that fortune.

Lip Bar

Melissa Butler, the company's founder, says she was "frustrated" by the lack of suitable lipsticks for women of color and therefore launched Lip Bar in 2012. Forbes reports that in 2018, Butler's natural lipstick line made close to $500,000 despite being rejected on Shark Tank in 2016. Target has started carrying it.

BLK+GRN

BLK+GRN, founded in 2018 by medical doctor Kristian Henderson, is an online marketplace selling a wide variety of products made by Black women for Black women. Hundreds of talented creators have contributed to BLK+GRN's wide selection of products, which includes everything from deodorant to body scrub.

Mented Cosmetics

Two Harvard alums, seeking the ideal nude lipstick for people of color, inspired the creation of Mented. Today, the company produces not only lipsticks but also blush and eyeshadow palettes. The Christmas lip trio is so great that Oprah chose it as one of her favorite things for the year 2020. The Ulta-exclusive line of lipsticks is "vegan, paraben-free, non-toxic, and cruelty-free."
